MONTREAL, JUNE 15, 2010 – For students of Michelangelo Elementary School in Riviere-des-Prairies, two years of fundraising to build a school in Kenya recently culminated with the presentation of an $8,500 cheque to the organization “Free the Children”.

After a short presentation by representatives from “Free the Children”, the Michelangelo For Freedom committee officially presented the cheque in order to begin the construction of their school immediately.

“The children of Kenya live in extreme poverty and have very little access to education,” said Anna Della Rocca, Principal of Michelangelo Elementary School. “Our students felt compelled to do what they can to help children who are not as fortunate as themselves.”
While the ceremony recognized the incredible efforts of everyone at Michelangelo Elementary School, the community of students, teachers and parents have already moved on to a new fundraising project: the construction of a well in Kenya.

Although schools in impoverished countries enable many children to receive an education, children still spend many hours each day traveling to retrieve water. With the construction of wells in remote villages, children will have for far less travel time and thus a greater opportunity to go to school.
