MONTREAL, JUNE 16, 2010 A comprehensive Green Policy and the first of its kind at any English school board across Quebec was adopted by the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) on Wednesday night.

The policy marks the culmination of nearly two years of research and will serve as the foundation for the establishment of healthy and sustainable schools and centres in the EMSB. Upon implementation it will provide a modern and forward-thinking approach to education while raising consciousness about the importance of sustainable development.
Encompassing four pillars: Education, creating Green and Healthy Space,

Sustainable Resource Use,
and Striving to be Toxic Free, this new initiative was created as a result of studying current behaviours, practices and attitudes regarding Education for Sustainable Development amongst administration, staff and students.
Each pillar has unique sub-goals which provide the individual framework to meet the declared objectives set out by the EMSB Green Committee.

In order to ensure the initiative remains practical, up to date and financially viable, it will be implemented over the course of a five-year board and school/centre action plan.
