MONTREA, JUNE 25, 2010 – A comprehensive Green Policy that encompasses all areas of operation and is the first of its kind at any English school board across Quebec has been adopted by the English Montreal School Board (EMSB).

The policy marks the culmination of nearly two years of research and will serve as the foundation for the establishment of healthy and sustainable schools and centres in the EMSB. Upon implementation it will provide a modern and forward-thinking approach to education while raising consciousness about the importance of sustainable development. It encompasses four pillars: education; creating green and healthy space; sustainable resource use; and striving to be toxic free.  This new initiative was created as a result of studying current behaviours, practices and attitudes regarding education for sustainable development amongst administration, staff and students.

Each pillar has unique sub-goals which provide the framework to meet the declared objectives set out by the EMSB Green Committee. The policy will be implemented through five-year board and school/centre action plans and meets an objective with the Strategic Orientations: Provide a Safe, Secure, Healthy and Welcoming Environment  in the Board's Strategic Plan 2009-2014.
