MONTREAL, NOVEMBER  9,  2010 –  As a follow up to a  public meeting held in early October concerning the possible establishment of a new public secondary school at the former Wagar  High School building  in Cote Saint-Luc (now known as the Giovanni Palatucci Facility) , the English Montreal School Board will convene with parents of students entering Grade 7 next year to see if there is a critical mass to begin operations in 2011-2012.

EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini has announced that a special meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 17 (7:30 p.m.) in the auditorium of Cote Saint-Luc City Hall (5801 Cavendish Boulevard), This is exclusively for parents whose children will enter Grade 7 next year.

Ms. Mancini said that the EMSB wants to see if  a sufficient number of parents are willing to make a commitment for 2011-2012,  in order to bring this matter to the attention of the Council of Commissioners the following week (November 24). “A decision to move forward with a Grade 7 only school for 2011-2012 would first require us to follow the consultation process,” said Ms. Mancini.

Dr. Syd Wise, the EMSB commissioner for Côte Saint-Luc and chair of a Focus Commission looking into new school projects, made it clear that should a new school open next year, it would cohabitate with both the Marymount Adult Education Centre and John Grant High School at the Palatucci Facility. The last mainstream public high school in Côte Saint-Luc was Wagar, which closed after the 2004-2005 academic year.
Plans call for such a new school offer Heritage Language Programs, such as Jewish/Hebrew studies and a sports concentration option. . Across the street from the Palatucci Facility, the city of Côte Saint-Luc is constructing an $18 million community and aquatic centre. The large schoolyard  has two large soccer fields and the Côte Saint-Luc Samuel Moskovitch Arena is one block away. The mayors of Côte Saint-Luc and Hampstead have already endorsed the project.
