MONTREAL, DECEMBER  1  Fourteen participating schools managed to collect about 3,000 new toys – as well as some monetary donations -- for the 19th annual Christmas and Chanukah Toy Tea, which was held on November 30 at Tudor Hall of the Ogilvy Department Store.

The toys will benefit children with AIDS and children who are being sheltered and protected from abuse, war, poverty and/or violence. This marks the eighth year of the English Montreal School Board’s (EMSB) involvement in the Toy Tea Campaign, which is an initiative of Spiritual, Religious and Moral Education Consultant Irene Miller. The participating  schools were: Honoré Mercier in St. Leonard; Dunrae Gardens and Carlyle in TMR; Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North; Roslyn in Westmount; LaurenHill Academy (Junior and Senior Campus), Parkdale and Gardenview schools in  St. Laurent; Vincent Massey Collegiate and Nesbitt in Rosemount; and Royal Vale School, Marymount Academy and Willingdon in N.D.G. Student representatives from each school, along with their respective spiritual community animators, teachers, administrators, and Ms. Miller, attended the event to drop off their donated toys and receive special certificates of participation.

This event also featured the singing of Christmas carols by several private school choirs and a fashion show. Attendees were treated to performances by the Willingdon and Roslyn school choirs, and their respective performances were big hits with the guests. The Toy Tea, chaired by Montreal philanthropist Ginger Petty, collects and donates brand new toys to over 5,000 children in over 27 shelters of various ethnic and religious backgrounds in Montreal, such as the Shield of Athena, the West Island Women’s Shelter, Multi-Femmes and Auberge Shalom. As well, Willingdon and Roslyn each gave a monetary donation towards the cause. These funds were collected from fundraisers that were held recently by both schools.
