MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 3, 2011 – Quebec’s most talented senior debaters will descend upon Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27th Avenue) in Rosemount this Friday, February 4 for the Quebec Senior Debate Tournament, a qualifier which will decide which teams will represent Quebec at the Senior National Debate Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running throughout the day, 16 teams of two debaters will continuously face off, giving the judges ample opportunities to decide which nine teams will punch their ticket to the national championships, to be held from April 14 to 17.  As the only public school in the tournament, Vincent Massey Collegiate will be joined by Lower Canada College, The Study, Trafalgar, Kuper Academy, Bialik High School, Stanstead College and West Island College.

Participation in Friday’s tournament continues the strong tradition of debating at Vincent Massey Collegiate. Recently, the school’s top junior team was the only public school which qualified to represent Canada at a tournament in Cambridge, England this May. Joining them will be two Ontario-based private schools.

“Our debaters are the best in the entire public school system. Considering that they are often competing against private schools, some who have debating as a course, it’s such an amazing thing that we qualified to go,” said Vincent Massey Debating coach Gregory Louden. “Our students shoulder an overwhelming workload to ensure they stay so competitive. They must keep up with world information and maintain a strong knowledge in law and international relations. We have done very well for ourselves and for the English Montreal School Board.”

Judging Friday’s competition will be CEGEP and university debate students, the coaches from all participating schools as well as special guests invited by Vincent Massey Collegiate. All judges are currently or have previously been involved in education, with a focus on debating.
