MONTREAL, APRIL 14, 2011 – The path to RoboCup International in Istanbul, Turkey will begin on April 15 and 16 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at Gerald McShane Elementary School (6111 Maurice Duplessis) in Montreal North, where schools from across Montreal will come together and compete for the opportunity to advance to the provincials round and eventually, the gateway to Asia.

The two day event, which is open to students in both elementary and high schools, attracts more than 400 students annually. The competition invites students to participate in varying robotics challenges which include dance, soccer as well as search and rescue. Unique to this year’s competition is the Beatles challenge, which includes five specific games inspired by music from the Beatles.

Two examples of these Beatles themed games include: “Strawberry Fields Forever,” where students must construct and program a robot that can distinguish and “pick” strawberries and bring them off the field. Robots must be able to do this while avoiding to take any blackberries out of the field. Or “The Fool on The Hill,” where the robots must climb a 45 degree ramp and once the robot has all four of its wheels on the ramp, it will attempt to shoot a ball into a bucket 16 inches away.

Selwyn House  Elementary School and the Seminaire de Sherbrooke split the top four prizes last year at St. Monica Elementary School in N.D.G. The Seminaire de Sherbrooke captured the Best Overall and Best High School titles while Selwyn House won the Sportsmanship and Best Elementary School awards.

An awards ceremony will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
