MCMASTERVILLE STUDENT UNVEILS ANTI-SMOKING DOCUMENTARY AT ROSLYN

MONTREAL, JUNE 3, 2011 – With the goal of deterring future teenagers from smoking, Erica Gélinas, a Grade 11 student at the International School in McMasterville teamed up the McGill University Health Centre to create an anti-smoking documentary which recently made its debut in front of Grade 5 and 6 students at Roslyn School in Westmount.

On hand to film Gélinas’ presentation and the reaction of the students was CTV Montreal. Their report will air on Sunday, July 5 during the 6 p.m. newscast.

Created by Gélinas as her Grade 11 personal project, the bilingual documentary is intended to target teenagers and before being exposed to their first smoking opportunity by presenting them with shocking pictures, statistics and emotionally charged interviews with four smokers who are currently suffering from head and neck cancer.

With a run-time of 11 minutes, since the subject matter could potentially be complicated for some younger students, cancer is explained in the most basic terms by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.

Ultimately, the goal of Gélinas is to ensure that her video is available to schools throughout Quebec, reach as many teenagers as possible and encourage them to shun this deadly habit.
