ROYAL WEST ACADEMY INAUGURATES NEW FIELD

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 18, 2011 – Physical Education has become the most anticipated class at Royal West Academy in Montreal West as students have begun using “The Montreal Westward Rotary Field,”  a completely renovated $135,000 state-of-the-art field which recently opened for business.

The project was funded by the Royal West Academy Home and School Association, the Montreal Westward Rotary, the Montreal West Civic Recreation Association (C.R.A), the Steve and Rob Michelin Hockey Tournament, the English Montreal School Board and the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports (MEL)  through Schoolyard Beautification Grant.  This field will serve the Royal West community as well as the children of Montreal West through various C.R.A. programs.

The project was initiated in 2009 by then Principal Mary Reynolds and completed under the watchful eye of her successor Tony Pita. Last summer the field was completely redone to include natural grass, proper drainage and an automatic sprinkler system.

“This is fantastic. The previous one was in terrible shape. The great thing about it is that the community all pitched in here,” said Joseph Lalla, Commissioner for Ward 2. “The sports teams at Royal West Academy will use this, the local soccer teams will use it. It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

“I think the most important thing is that it’s a field of dreams,” said Roma Medwid, EMSB Deputy Director General. “It’s a dream to have this quality field in the community and for the school community. It provides for first-rate facilities for sports because we have first-rate instruction at Royal West and the students will have the opportunity to work on a field that is equal to their skills that we’re developing as a school board. We all worked together to realize a dream for the community and the school and it will serve everybody’s needs.”
