EMSB SPEARHEADING SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS AT ANNUAL QPAT CONFERENCE

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 17, 2011 – With the annual Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers (QPAT) Conference set to mark the third anniversary of the Spotlight on the Arts program, this year’s edition, taking place on Friday, November 25 (8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.), will undoubtedly be the highlight of the two-day event at the Palais des Congrés.

The Spotlight is the only event in Quebec to cater to the needs of visual arts, music, dance and drama educators in the anglophone sector. It attracts teachers from all over the province for a day of learning, sharing and creating.

Billed as a forum where the art world meets the classroom, teachers, students, and artists will once again work side by side at the QPAT Conference in a hands-on, effervescent on-the-spot arts event. Individuals will have the opportunity to paint a collective mural with the artist collective EN MASSE, while others will participate in creating choreography or will learn to create songs in Garage Band. In the afternoon, students will lead teachers in a beat-boxing session with the help of Montreal musician, Nicolas Palacios.

Current students from the EMSB’s John F. Kennedy High School and Perspectives School in St. Michel, Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard, James Lyng High School in St. Henri, as well as former students from Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North will be involved in the EN MASSE mural, the beat-boxing workshop and filming for Artlive.tv.

James Keylon, actor, director and clown as well as co-writer of the Cirque du Soleil show Kooza, will deliver the keynote address. Julie Greto, Visual Art specialist from Marymount Academy will also provide an afternoon Visual Arts workshop. Other planned activities include a gallery walk and workshops led by specialists in all four Arts domains (Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama).

The Spotlight on the Arts is organized yearly by MAD². MAD² is composed of Arts consultants and advisors from the nine English School Boards with the participation of the non-profit foundation LEARN. Its goal is to increase awareness of the importance of the four Arts as well as to foster expertise in Arts education. Its members believe that inspired Art teachers inspire students to reach new heights of self-expression and self-awareness, creating true life-long learners.
