MEASELS VACCINATION CAMPAIGN TO BEGIN IN JANUARY

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 22, 2011 – In order to combat the rising cases of measles in Quebec, the English Montreal School Board  (EMSB) will be working with the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) to offer the measles vaccination in schools as of January 2012.

Since April 2011, more than 750 cases of the measles have been reported in Quebec; two-thirds have been in schools. In order to stop the spread of measles, the MSSS will be vaccinating all students and staff who have not received all the necessary doses of vaccine or who do not have proof of vaccination beginning in the new year.

Only people who have not been adequately vaccinated or who do not have sufficient proof of vaccination will be contacted to receive the vaccine. Parents whose children fall into this category  will be sent a consent form or a request for proof of vaccination. The vaccinations will be offered at school and students aged 14-years and older can give consent themselves.

In order to provide proof of vaccination, the MSSS asks parents to check the vaccination records of their children. If a child has been vaccinated, one of the following names will be listed in the vaccination record: M-M-R, M-M-R II, Priorix or Priorix-Tetra, Trivirix, Attenuvax, Rimevax, Rubeovax, Lirugen, M-R Vax or anti-rougeoleux vaccine.

If there is a case of measles at school, students and staff who are not protected may be temporarily excluded from school. Parents are being advised that if their child begins to exhibit symptoms of the measles such as a rash, cough, fever, conjunctivitis (pink eye) or a general feeling of illness, it is advised that he or she is kept at home and that the a call be made to Info Santé at 8-1-1.
