MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 20, 2012 – With the presentation of 36 red shirts in a school-wide assembly recently, the Playground Leadership Program at Our Lady of Pompei Elementary School in Ahuntsic finally took shape.
Serving as leaders for all grades will be select students in Grade 5 and 6 whose mission is to develop and foster a sense of pride, respect for their school and encourage leadership and community action.
“Since the passing away of Marjorie Raymond, there has been much publicity about bullying. This Leadership program is our school’s direct response to the bullying that goes on with our youth in today’s society,” said Our Lady of Pompei Principal Joan MacMillian,“We want to ensure that all our students have a healthy and safe environment and that we reduce aggressive behaviours and injuries. Students have a right to come to school knowing that they will not be shoved, pushed, threatened or called names.”
“Having this leadership program will provide a safe and structured environment and make better use of the schoolyard area while respecting one another’s space,” added MacMillian. “Our leaders will be working with younger students in various games and playground activity situations. Leaders will oversee games that are planned daily and help students play by the rules of the game. Lead, Play and Solve is the playground leadership motto and the school staff and leaders will do all that it takes to make this program a success.”
