MONTREAL, MAY 3, 2012 — For the seventh year in a row, the English Montreal School Board is continuing its partnership with the Montreal Impact soccer team through its “All the Way with the Impact” program.
The traditional “EMSB Night” took place on May 2 when the Impact hosted Toronto FC at Olympic Stadium. This was part of the Amway Canadian Championship, which involves the three top professional clubs in Canada, in the race to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. That is an international competition between professional clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The game ended in a scoreless tie.
During half-time, the EMSB’s presence was recognized and two students were presented with $500 Tony Licursi Bursaries by Chairman Angela Mancini and Vice-Chairman Sylvia Lo Bianco. Mr. Licursi was the team’s statistician and a devoted member of the James Lyng High School Alumni Association. He passed away a number of years ago. The award recognizes excellence in school and sports, preferably soccer.
This year’s winners were Grade 5 students Brandon Hernandez-Perez from St.Monica Elementary School in NDG and Angela Ghazarian from Cedarcrest Elementary School in St. Laurent. Brandon is described as “an excellent, all-round athlete who has been instrumental in the success of the school’s basketball, soccer (indoor and outdoor) and flag football team. “He is a true team player,” says Principal Claire Caillé. Angela is described as “humble, yet always available to lend a helping hand to both her peers and teachers.” She plays soccer, basketball, flag football, badminton, and loves to swim. In addition, she is a gifted piano and violin player.
