Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 9, 2012 Marymount Academy (5100 Côte Saint-Luc Road)  in N.D.G. will officially unveil the Marc Garneau Department of Science at a ceremony before staff and students on Friday, October 12 (9:45 a.m.)

Mr. Garneau is  best known for becoming the first Canadian in space in 1984. During his 15 years as a Canadian astronaut, he flew on three space missions and logged over 677 hours in space. He went on to become  president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2005. At the present time he is  the Federal Liberal Member of Parliament for the riding of Westmount-Ville Marie, which encompasses the portion of N.D.G. where Marymount is located.

Marymount Academy Principal Craig Olenik met with Mr. Garneau last June, at which time he accepted the honour of having the Department of Science named after him. There are already two schools in Canada – Marc Garneau Collegiate in Toronto and  École Secondair Marc Garneau in Trenton – carrying his name.

“We are very proud to have Marc Garneau lend his name and mentorship to our Science program,” says Mr. Olenik. “As International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program,
we encourage students to be active learners and well-rounded . From his perspective as a Canadian astronaut and now an elected politician, we believe Marc Garneau serves as a fabulous role model for our students.”

Mr. Garneau will be at the ceremony and after the formal part of the event concludes, he will answer questions from students.

Marymount Academy will hold its annual Open House on Wednesday, October 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
