MONTREAL, OCTOBER 10, 2012 – One of Canada’s finest traditions will be held on Monday, October 15 (9 a.m.) at Our Lady of Pompei Elementary School in Ahuntsic as 30 individuals will be officially sworn in as Canadian citizens.
The ceremony will also mark the beginning of Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Citizenship Week, which is set to run from October 15 to 21. The week is intended to encourage all Canadians to reflect on the value of citizenship, what it means to be Canadian and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
In addition to family, friends and students, on hand for this special occasion will be Denis Coderre, Liberal Member of Parliament for Bourassa.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada will have a strong presence at the ceremony as Gilles Pelletier, Regional Director of CIC, Vito Vassallo, acting Regional Director of CIC and Cathie Giroux, manager of citizenship for CIC’s Quebec Region will be on hand. Barbara Seal, member of the Order of Canada will be presiding over the ceremony.
Representing the English Montreal School Board will be Deputy Director General Roma Medwid and Regional Director Claude Dansereau.
Ensuring that students also benefit greatly from this experience, emceeing the ceremony will be Grade 6 students Daniel Di Grande and Julia Ranallo. The Grade 5 class will sing “O Canada” and the room will be decorated with flags hand-crafted by Grade 3 and 4 students representing the countries of origin of the new citizens. All students from Grades 3 to 6 will be in attendance.
