|EMSB APPOINTS LEW LEWIS DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES|
MONTREAL, OCTOBER 10, 2001— Lew Lewis has been appointed director of Student Services for the English Montreal School Board (EMSB). He succeeds Marie-Claude Gatineau, who retired on July 1, 2001.
Mr. Lewis, a psychologist by profession, has worked in the public education sector for 34 years. He joined the former Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (PSBGM) in 1966-67 and has served as a teacher, guidance counsellor, psychologist, and guidance services consultant. Latterly, he coordinated the guidance services of the PSBGM. In 1987, he was appointed assistant director of the Student Services Department, a position which he retained with the EMSB until stepping in as interim director of the department in July 2001.
Over the years, Mr. Lewis’ major responsibilities have included the supervision of a team of professionals delivering guidance, psychological, speech and language, drug education, oral interpretation, health/social, special education, and child care worker services, He has been involved in many initiatives, most notably the establishment of the Board’s Traumatic Events Support Team (the first such team in Quebec schools), the Herzl Teenage Heath Unit Program (Jewish General Hospital), the expansion of the Board’s Work Experience Program, and the establishment of the EMSB’s first Summer Language Camp.
Last year, Mr. Lewis was honoured by the Association of Administrators of English Schools of Quebec (AAESQ) with the Outstanding Achievement Award. He also received the Justine Harris Award for Excellence in Counselling from the Quebec Counselling Association. A former president of the Quebec Association of Student Services Administrators, Mr. Lewis has also conducted various research projects and has been involved in numerous professional associations and community activities over the years.
