MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 5, 2012- On Wednesday November 7 (7 p.m.) an important presentation concerning bullying will be held at Westmount High School (4350 Ste. Catherine Street West), presented by the Mental Health Resource Centre (MHRC) of the English Montreal School Board entitled Working Together to Build Safe Schools and Communities.
The presentation will begin with a discussion by three members of the EMSB Student Services Department’s Mental Health Resource Centre: Janet Perlis (psychologist), Lori Rubin, (behaviour management specialist) and Despina Vassiliou (coordinator of the MHRC and psychologist). The discussion will cover topics such as:
*The typical “cast of characters” in a bullying situation;
*The difference between conflict and bullying;
*The different forms of bullying;
*How to recognize if your child is displaying “bully behavior”, is the victim of a bully, or is struggling with his/her “bystander” status;
*What you, as parents, can do if your child is involved in a bullying situation.
Following the presentation, parents will be divided into small groups and take part in exercises that will explore various case studies. “The goal of these exercises will be to find solutions to the given scenarios using the theories and tools demonstrated in the presentation,” said Ms. Vassiliou. “Given that this is such a timely and universal subject, we are encouraging parents to attend. By addressing this issue in specific workshops and forums we hope to reduce and eventually eliminate this serious issue permanently.”
