MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 30, 2012 – If the last two years are anything to go by, LaurenHill Academy’s production of South Pacific is going to be a tour de force; productions of Grease from two years ago and Hairspray from last year sold out. There’s no reason why this year should be any different.
Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. She learns that the mother of Emile’s children was an island native, and because of her prejudices, refuses his marriage proposal. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable falls in love with a Tonkinese girl, but denies himself a happy future with her out of the same prejudices that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
Thirty students from Grades 9 through 11, along with their production team, have been hard at work on rehearsals, choreography, costume, and set design almost since day 1. Guidance Counsellor Susan Freed, who has over 30 years of theatre experience under her belt, directs the play. Her assistant, drama teacher Kelly Dayan, also plays Bloody Mary in this production. English teacher Gail Ewing is music director, with costumes by French teacher Sophie St. Pierre, and sets by art teacher Sharon Erskine. LHA graduate and dance troupe alumnus Effie Vardatsikos handles choreography, while sound and music are under the capable hands of music teacher Daniel Ouellette and history teacher Louis Bilodeau. Props and stage management are being handled by LHA childcare worker Marjorie Bober. Lighting and sound by Robert Lynch and Chris Blais. And well-known Montreal set designer Jean Claude Olivier will provide spectacular painted backdrops. And as an added bonus LHA Principal Pelagia Nickoletopoulos and VP Mike Brown will make cameo appearances.
South Pacific will take place on Friday, December 14 ( 8 p.m.) and Saturday, December 15 (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.) at LaurenHill Academy’s Senior Campus auditorium (2505 Cote Vertu). Tickets are $12 and must be purchased in advance: 514-331-8781.
The musical is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals: www.rnh.com.
