|EMSB STUDENT SUFFERS A TRAGIC LOSS DUE TO FIRE IN MONTREAL NORTH|
MONTREAL, APRIL 23, 2013- On March 22, tragedy struck when a fire broke out in an apartment building in Montreal North. The family of Marshawn Forbes, a student at Perspectives I Alternative High School in St. Michel, lost everything. But the most tragic part of this story was the death of Marshawn’s four year old sister.
The community at Perspectives I has come together in an attempt to help the Forbes family through this very difficult time. Head teacher Barbara White, along with the numerous staff members, families of students, and close friends, have been working hard to collect donations such as household items, furniture, clothing, and toys. They have also collected close to $2,000 in cash and gift cards. In addition, the communities at other alternative schools, the Montreal Teacher’s Association and The Montreal Google office, have been actively involved in the ongoing collection for the Forbes family.
Perspectives I and the FEDEX Call Centre, located on Côte-de-Liésse, have had a long standing relationship for several years. After being informed of the tragic news, FEDEX provided the Forbes family with charitable donations such as a washing machine, sofa, crib, strollers, tables, chairs, and many other everyday necessities. They also designated four members of their team to deliver the items. In addition, FEDEX will be holding a luncheon with all proceeds going to Marshawn's family in the form of gift cards.
Since the fire, Marshawn along with his mother and two brothers have moved into their new home. “Although nothing will ever replace their loss, the outpouring generosity of the community has been outstanding,” said English Montreal School Board Chairman Angela Mancini. “We would like to send our sincere condolences to the Forbes family during this extremely emotional time.”
