|WILLINGDON STUDENTS HONOURED WITH QFHSA PAT LEWIS HUMANITARIAN AWARD|
MONTREAL, MAY 14, 2013 – Every year, the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations (QFHSA) honours an individual or group, at the elementary school level, who has shown outstanding efforts toward a humanitarian cause.
The Willingdon Elementary School Student Council (on behalf of the entire student body) is this year’s proud recipient, after the co-presidents of the Home and School Association nominated them for the many different humanitarian projects in which they are involved. Some of these include the coordination and collection of food donations for the NDG Food Depot, the support of a foster child in Ghana and the donation of French books to Haiti.
Willingdon students demonstrate empathy and great care towards their fellow students and are actively involved in a Lunch Buddies program that aims at mentoring younger students and helps them play safely and fairly. Grade 6 students are line monitors for the Kindergarten children and are there to help them line up and get to class and to their busses. Under the direction of their science teacher, they also help teach younger students. They are constantly coming up with ideas of how to make Willingdon a “kid-friendly” school!
The Willingdon Elementary School Student Council is composed of 40 students with an executive of 15 members. Three members of the executive were escorted by the teacher who leads the council, Isabelle Daniel, and two parents from the Home and School Association to the 69TH annual conference and awards banquet that took place at the Sheraton Airport Hotel on April 20. There, the students were treated to a beautiful dinner and were presented with a plaque and certificate. Proudly, they accepted this acknowledgement and thanked the members of the QFHSA for bestowing this honour to their school. Amongst a room full of adults, students Avery Ben Jacob, Anna Chuprun and Owen Carson were given the opportunity to shine for themselves and their peers and they grabbed it, capturing the hearts of all those who attended! “We are extremely proud of them and every Willingdon student!” said Principal Susie Douranos. “We wish to thank Laura Pearce and Meghan Donovan, the co-presidents of Home and School, for nominating such well deserving recipients!”
