MONTREAL, MAY 9, 2013 The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Before and After School Enriched (B.A.S.E) Daycare Program is celebrating Daycare Week from May 13 to 17, with the inauguration of the Atrium Beautification Project: Phase II and its fifth annual B.A.S.E festival.

Daycare Services will formally inaugurate the Atrium Beautification Project: Phase II on Wednesday, May 15  (10  a.m. to 11 a.m.) at the EMSB Administrative Head Office (6000 Fielding Avenue) in N.D.G.

Artist Sylvia Garland and B.A.S.E students from 14 schools collaborated on an eight-foot tall sculpture that simultaneously resembles a tree and a human being. This sculpture represents all of the B.A.S.E educators. Garland and the students also made smaller sculptures that simultaneously resemble branches and all of the B.A.S.E children. These smaller sculptures will be connected to one another to form the arms of the tall sculpture. This 3D installation represents the theme of this year’s Atrium Beautification Project: Our Nature is Nurturing.

Garland spear-headed the Atrium Beautification Project in 2011, during Daycare Week, with a large scale 3D art installation created collaboratively by 11 daycares. Frames housing sculptures that represent activities that students get to enjoy in daycare, such as animation, photography, film-making, music and journalism, are suspended from the ceiling to show the intangible links that binds relationships in our B.A.S.E daycares.

The Atrium Beautification Project serves as a nature-rich space for all EMSB employees to enjoy. It also shows the environmental consciousness being cultivated in the B.A.S.E daycares. In January 2011, Daycare Services adopted a green plan in accordance with the EMSB’s green policy. Today, all of the 29 B.A.S.E daycares participate in environmental awareness projects including composting, waste reduction, cooking with local ingredients, gardening and more.

B.A.S.E Festival
The Association des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec (ASGEMSQ) sets aside a week each year to acknowledge all the school daycares in the province. This year’s Daycare Week theme is Thank You for Your High Energy.

The B.A.S.E Festival is called EMSB B.A.S.E Thanks You for Your Energy. Daycare Services is hosting its fifth annual creative arts festival on Wednesday, May 15 (6:45 pm to 9 p.m.) at 6000 Fielding Avenue.

The festival will showcase the different talents and expertise of our B.A.S.E students through films, animations, music videos, live choreography, a live drum show and more.

B.A.S.E students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6 have been working diligently since October to show their multimedia projects and live performances at this festival. The students executed all projects, from conception to finished products.

May 15 is Daycare Employees Recognition Day.

There are 29 daycares in the EMSB. More than 3,000 students participate in the B.A.S.E program, which is facilitated by 29 B.A.S.E. technicians, 190 B.A.S.E educators, three B.A.S.E advisors and nearly 30 tutors from Concordia and McGill Universities.
