Press Releases

MONTREAL, JUNE 3 , 2013 Michelangelo International Elementary School in Rivière-des–Prairies has received formal notice of its acceptance as  an  official International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) School. It joins Carlyle Elementary School in Town of Mount Royal, which attained the same status earlier in the spring.

“This is wonderful news,” said EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini. “I would like to congratulate all of those individuals associated with the school who made this happen. With two International schools at the primary level, one in the East and another in the West, this is another example of the  specialized programming we  can offer in the public system.”

Added Michelangelo International School  Governing Board Chair Emilio Tamarro. “This is excellent news. I am so proud to have been part of a great team and what an accomplishment it has been! Under the leadership of our principal Anna Della Rocca and the wonderful work of IB Facilitator Ida De Laurentiis, the teaching staff, daycare staff and our greatest pride, the students, we have succeeded in achieving this goal. We are grateful for the great support that our EMSB administrators and our commissioner Rosa Cerrelli, who believed in us and provided us with undivided support throughout the journey.

“I am very proud of the outstanding results provided by the report that came with the quick reply from IB. We are setting the bar higher for every child, regardless of any challenge that may be presented. This is a program that requires dedication, collaboration and team work. Teachers are required to meet regularly to plan and reflect on their best practices. Students also work collaboratively throughout the six Units of Inquiry presented to them every year. They are motivated, stimulated and excited about learning.”

The IB-PYP program addresses the child of the 21st century.  It meets the requirements of the Quebec Education Program and engages the students in learning and thinking, while constructing their knowledge.  “The Primary Years Programme is aimed towards students between the ages of three and 12, in which its emphasis is on the total growth of a developing child,” explains Ms. Della Rocca. “It helps to touch the hearts and minds of students, as well as encompass their social, physical and cultural needs, along with fostering strong academic development through an inquiry-based approach. Students develop the skills to become life-long learners.”

At the heart of the program’s philosophy is a commitment to structured, purposeful inquiry as the leading vehicle for learning. The IB – PYP offers students the best in pedagogical practices and helps children to construct knowledge and develop an internationally-minded attitude through questioning and investigation of various topics, while offering the best in quality education for students. This is more than just a content-oriented program, as it deals with concepts and represents an engaging approach to learning. Students will develop skills that will serve them in their pursuit of constructing knowledge and social and international mindedness as they continue their studies.
Six transdisciplinary themes of global significance provide the framework for exploration and study:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet
