MONTREAL, JUNE 5, 2013 –   The Gardenview Elementary School community in St. Laurent has been involved in a year-long collaborative effort to raise enough funds to allow 30 staff members and parents to complete a 32-km walk on August 24 to support the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers.
Through a number of school fundraisers, including a walk for students, the school raised over $44,000, surpassing the maximum amount of money needed for the 30 walkers to walk the one day.  Some members have raised enough to walk the two days.

To help raise $1,250 per walker, the students successfully received pledges from family and friends while others encouraged their parents to donate on line to support their teachers or principal.  On June 4, 850 students, staff and parents gathered in the school yard to commemorate the success of reaching this goal and to prepare for the school walk.  Following the walk, students danced, enjoyed refreshing fruit and relished in the day’s festivities.

Such an endeavor could not have been possible without the support of many.  Principal Evelyn Alfonsi has extended special thanks to parents Betty Skagkos and Lorne Levitt for the music, the Bountounis-Sarantis families for the fruit and the Home and School Association as well as teacher Sylvaine Couillard and vice-principal Sandra Leveille for helping to organize the walk for the students and for their interest in fundraising for this valuable cause.

“We commend our staff members and parents who will be representing Gardenview on August 24 and thank the Gardenview community, especially our students, for helping raise the necessary funds to make this special undertaking a resounding success,” said Ms. Alfonsi.
