|EMSB TO AWAIT INVESTIGATION BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISION ON PALATUCCI BUILDING NAME|
MONTREAL, JUNE 21, 2013 – The English Montreal School Board has no intention at the present time of removing the name of Giovanni Palatucci from a building they dedicated in his honour, despite reports alleging he was a Nazi collaborator.
In 2006 the EMSB named the former Wagar High School building in Côte Saint-Luc after Palatucci, a former Italian wartime police official who was credited with saving 5,000 Jews during the Holocaust.
According to research conducted by historians at the Centro Primo Levi at the Center for Jewish History, Palatucci was a relatively low-level officer who worked with the Nazis to help identify Jews who would eventually be shipped to death camps.
“Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial, plans to examine the research,” said EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini. “Until such time as there is a more affirmative answer regarding this news we will not be making any changes on our part.”
