|GENERAL VANIER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO INAUGURATE NEW $900,000 GYMNASIUM|
MONTREAL, MAY 6, 2002— General Vanier Elementary School (4555 Buies) in Saint Leonard will formally inaugurate its new $900,000 million state of the art gymnasium facility on Tuesday May 7 at 7:30 p.m.
The school officially opened in August 2000 to accommodate the growing number of students in the Saint Leonard area. Each of the three other English Montreal School Board (EMSB) primary institutions in the district were bursting at the seams. However, given the fact that the building previously housed an adult education centre, there was no gymnasium. For the past two years students have taken their physical education classes in the lunch room. Because the ceiling was only seven feet in height, this severely restricted activities, meaning no basketball, volleyball or badminton.
Last year the Ministry of Education allocated the funds for this important project and construction began in October. A separate facility, attached to the school, had to be built.
"Having a gym means a lot to this community," says Principal Francine Jarret Imhoff. "We look forward to being able to offer a sports program next year, perhaps after school or at lunch, maybe even both time slots. Having a gym also means the students will be able to participate in tournaments with other schools."
