|OLYMPIC FEVER COMES TO GERALD MCSHANE|
MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 5, 2014 – With the countdown to the Winter Olympics in Sochi down to hours, students at Gerald McShane Elementary School (6111 Maurice Duplessis) in Montreal North will have the chance to experience their very own Olympic Day on Friday, February 7.
Years of training in Jonathan Stein’s physical education classes will be put to the test, beginning at 10 a.m. with the torch relay. Following the lighting of the Gerald McShane cauldron, Rosanna Tomiuk, a two-time silver medalist in Water Polo at the Pan American games, will speak to the students.
Inspired by Tomiuk, students, who will all be sporting Team Canada t-shirts, will then put their athletic abilities to the test with an hour of winter activities outside, mirroring certain events set to take place in Sochi.
The McShane Games aside, the entire EMSB family will be paying close attention to Sochi, as on February 11, freestyle skier Kaya Turski, a graduate of both Willingdon (N.D.G.) and Royal West Academy (Montreal West) will be competing in the inaugural ski slopestyle competition. Turski, who recently returned from a near career-threatening injury to her knee, is a five-time Winter X Games gold medalist and is the gold medal favorite in Sochi.
