OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER OF OFFICIAL LANGUAGES TO FORMALLY LAUNCH NEW VIDEO AT LAURENHILL ACADEMY

MONTREAL, MAY 6, 2014-    The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada will formally launch a new video on the occasion of National Teachers Day, Wednesday, May 7 (9:30 a.m.) at LaurenHill Academy (2505 Cote Vertu) in St. Laurent. It will be shown in the broadcasting class of teacher Louis Bilodeau, whose students were involved in the production process more than a year ago.

LaurenHill’s online radio station, the only one of its kind in Canada, is home to  The Anglais-French show. It is hosted in both official languages by two 16-year-old students, one of them speaking only in English, the other only in French.

The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages produced a video of Commissioner Graham Fraser’s appearance on the show last year. He and the students talk about the benefits of learning both official languages, the place of English and French in Canada and Quebec, and other interesting matters.

The video, which can now be seen at http://www.officiallanguages.gc.ca/en/resources/teachers_parents will be made available  to   high schools across the country and can be used by students for classroom discussions during a history or language course. It conveys the views of students who live in both languages and have decided to use the medium of radio to promote bilingualism.
It will serve to open conversations on a variety of topics, such as:

  • the challenge of learning and maintaining your second language;
  • the benefits of bilingualism;
  • our language rights as Canadians;
  • the vitality of minority Francophone communities;
  • the language situation in Quebec and its English-speaking communities.
