MONTREAL, MAY 15, 2014While Royal Vale School in N.D.G. specializes in math and science, they might have to add soccer to that list as Grade 2 student Lucio Gaetanirecently returned from the Mundialito Soccer Tournament in Portugal.
Held over the course of eight days in April in the Algarve region of Portugal, the tournament welcomed 178 teams in various age groups for a total of more than 4,000 participating athletes.
Lucio was on one of five teams to represent Canada, where his team advanced to the Quarter-Finals. Over the course of five games, Lucio scored two goals.
“I really had fun sleeping in a hotel with my team and practicing soccer on the beach. I made a lot of new friends,” said Lucio. “I want to go back next year because there are a lot of good soccer players.”
“This tournament was an enriching and fascinating experience for both the children and parents,” added Sandra, Lucio’s mother. “We met people from all around the world and we were able to watch our children succeed on such a competitive stage, against European teams who play at a much higher level. We, as parents, are very proud of our kids.”
