GERALD MCSHANE TO RECEIVE $25,000 FOR SCHOOLYARD BEAUTIFUCATION

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 23, 2014 – The schoolyard at Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North will receive a much needed face-lift, having been awarded $25,000 from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Leisure in order to transform the area into a haven for students, complete with play and rest areas as well as green spaces.

“Next spring, Gerald McShane’s schoolyard will look quite different than it does today: it will be beautified as rest areas and green spaces will be added,” said Ms. Rita de Santis, Liberal MNA for Bourassa-Sauvé. “This will surely contribute in making it more attractive for students and they will find a bit of respite during hot school days. I am convinced this project will improve their quality of life at school.”

“Thanks to these improvements, Gerald McShane’s students, as well as its teaching and other staff members, will benefit from a friendlier and more welcoming environment,” added Sylvia LoBianco, Vice-Chairman of the English Montreal School Board and commissioner for Gerald McShane.

The funding is made possible by the MELS “School yard Beautification Measure.”  It enables school boards to develop various projects to promote the physical condition of schools and their surrounding areas, such as schoolyard beautification, in partnership with the community. This measure helps in creating a stimulating and safe environment, conducive to the practice of sports among other tangible benefits.
