MONTREAL,  DECEMBER 10 , 2014 –  Launched as an after-school activity at the start of the 2013-2014 academic year, the student Chess Club at Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North has  doubled its membership and scheduled eight tournaments.

The Chess Club meets over the course of five lunchtimes during every nine-day cycle.  To date, they have organized three in-house chess meets between staff and students entitled “Who Will Be King?!”  Eight similar tournaments are scheduled for the following dates from 3:30 p.m to 5:30 p.m. in room 2217: December 17; January 13; February 3; February 16; March 9; March 23; April 8 and April 21.

On January 13, the Chess Club will be visiting Michelangelo International School in RDP in the spirit of kindling interest in the game and promoting the school.  They will be challenging eight fifth and sixth graders for four rounds of chess.  Similar arrangements are in the making to visit three other elementary schools who expressed interest. There are also plans to organize a board-wide chess tournament on May 5.

Lester B Pearson High School administration and staff recognize the power of chess as a learning tool that enhances creativity, concentration, critical thinking & problem solving skills, memory, academic achievement, cultural enrichment, intellectual maturity, self-esteem, standardized test scores and a plethora of other qualities that every parent, student and teacher desire.
