MONTREAL, March 30, 2015 – The English Montreal School Board will hold its annual Volunteer Appreciation Evening on Tuesday, April 14 at the Plaza Volare of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (6600 Cote de Liesse) in St. Laurent. This year’s event is being held to commemorate National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 12 to 18, under the theme of “Making A Difference.”
Time and space do not allow the EMSB to honour all of its nearly 1,500 volunteers in person. Therefore, only those individuals who have volunteered for more than five years will attend the reception, representing some 500 people. However, several thousand copies of a commemorative program book will be distributed to each school. The emcees for the evening will be Global News senior anchor Jamie Orchard and EMSB Communications and Marketing Specialist Michael Cohen.
This year’s Volunteer of Distinction is Mona Vaudry from St. Gabriel Elementary School in Pointe St. Charles. A volunteer with St. Gabriel for 35 years, Ms. Vaudry, who lives only 10 minutes from the school, volunteers there every day from 6:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and does everything from decorating the school for special events, to preparing snacks for the students, to being involved with the school’s lunch program and the Home and School Committee.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Ultimate Destinie, a Montreal-based multi-cultural band featuring five highly-talented musicians performing R&B, Pop, Rock, Jazz and Latin tunes. The group also includes the Wali Muhammad Trio, who perform the finest in vocal jazz music. Mr. Muhammad has recorded with Oliver Jones and the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir, has performed classical pieces with the Metropolitan Orchestra and I Musici Of Montreal, and has performed for several heads of state including U.S. President Barack Obama, the late Nelson Mandela and former Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
As well, Montreal comedian – and Vice Principal of the Galileo Adult Education Centre in Montreal North – Joe Cacchione will perform a brief stand-up comedy set during the evening.
