|Montrealers join Jamie Oliver’s Global Food Revolution on May 15th to Promote Healthy Eating|
Montreal – May 7, 2015 – The Montreal Food Revolution Day ambassadors are joining chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver and hundreds of others across the world to take part in the fourth annual Food Revolution Day on Friday May 15th, 2015.
Food Revolution Day, launched in 2012, is right at the heart of all the work Jamie and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation do to engage and inspire people of all ages to learn about food and how to cook it. More than 1,300 ambassadors in more than 120 countries are currently planning events, both big and small. Here in Montreal a number of community events are being planned.
Squash it Sandwich & Lufa Farms
Lufa Farms will be helping spread the news about Food Revolution Day 2015. Over 30,000 Montrealers will be engaged via Lufa Farms’ social media channels with information about the day, including Jamie’s Squash it Sandwich recipe. Jamie is challenging people around the world to make this easy and healthy vegetarian sandwich on May 15th. Lufa Farms will be giving a free apple to every Lufavore in their basket to complete the ingredient list for this recipe. Also, individuals wanting to sign up to purchase produce from the local rooftop farm will receive a one-time $30 credit with the promo code “foodrevolution”.
Squash it Sandwich & Restaurant Renoir
Renoir restaurant within the Sofitel hotel will be adding Jamie’s Squash it Sandwich on to its new bar menu as of May 15th for a month. Chef Oliver Perret will be upgrading the recipe by adding lobster into the dish. He will be bringing young chefs into the kitchen to cook up the meal for a select group of Montreal foodies. All proceeds from the sale of the sandwich on May 15th will benefit La Tablée des Chefs to empower teenagers with cooking skills.
Merton Elementary School Garden
Another initiative taking place in Montreal is the construction and planting of a school garden at Merton Elementary School in Cote St. Luc. On May 15th, the school will be hosting a party to kick off the garden season for students, parents, staff and neighbours within the community. Lufa Farms will be present at the event to show the students samples of fruits and vegetables grown in its greenhouses. There will also be a nutritionist on site to speak with the students about healthy eating.
“We are so thrilled to once again be involved in Food Revolution Day and help Jamie spread his message of food education”, says Lauren Cracower, Merton School parent. “Montreal is a foodie’s paradise yet there are still many people, and children, who do not know the basics of healthy eating and cooking.”
This year, Food Revolution Day is a global campaign to put compulsory food education back on the school curriculum. Jamie passionately believes that by educating children about food and cooking in a fun and engaging way, we can equip them with the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives, for themselves and their future families.
With overweight and obesity statistics increasing at an alarming rate, and preventable diet-related disease claiming more lives earlier than ever before, it has never been more important to educate children about food, where it comes from and how it affects their bodies. Food Revolution Day is about getting kids food smart and setting them up for a long, healthy life.
