|INSPIRATIONS HONOURS DYNAMIC FUNDS CAREGIVER OF INSPIRATION JESSE HEFFRING|
MONTREAL, JUNE 3, 2015- Inspirations Newspaper (www.inspirationsnews.com), will be honouring the 2015 Dynamic Funds Caregiver of Inspiration Jesse Heffring at a ceremony on Wednesday, June 3 (1 p.m.) at Summit School (1750 Deguire Street) in Saint Laurent.
The Dynamic Funds Caregiver of Inspiration is an award given by Inspirations Newspaper that acknowledges and recognizes outstanding work in the field of special needs. It provides an opportunity for peers to learn about interesting and innovative classroom techniques, enables knowledge transfer amongst staff, schools and school boards, and celebrates the school, its students, parents and volunteers.
Jesse Heffring had never worked with students with special needs before he began volunteering at Summit School in 2003. After taking a tour of the school, the filmmaker was asked to help out with the production of a documentary. The experience was so positive for Heffring and the students, he joined the staff as Media Project Coordinator in 2005.
Throughout his years at Summit School, Heffring and his students have produced fiction, animation, and documentary films as well as highly acclaimed original plays in which the students are involved in every level of production. From researching, storyboarding and writing, he truly believes in the importance of helping the students find their own voice through the arts.
“Creative work gives you a type of confidence when you are truly involved in it. It’s not dictated to you but you are free to share your ideas,” says Heffring. Unlike in other subjects where students are taught concrete facts, he believes a creative concept brought to life though performance teaches students that their own ideas are valuable.
Summit School is a private school recognized and subsidized in the public interest by the Ministère de L'Education du Loisir et du Sport. The students, ranging in age from four to 21, present with a range of difficulties including intellectual disabilities, autism, and/or behavioural and emotional disturbances.
Inspirations is a bi-annual newspaper that offers a snapshot of our special needs community. Sponsored by the English Montreal School Board Student Services Department and the Communications and Marketing Division, it is circulated across the island of Montreal, the South Shore, and Laval.
