MONTREAL, MAY 15, 2003- Our Lady of Pompei Elementary School (9944 St. Michel Street) in Ahuntsic and Honore-Mercier Elementary School (8280 Nantes) in St. Leonard will hold the final legs of their highly successful campaign to assist the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Friday, May 16.
From 9 a.m. to 2:55 p.m., as part of Super Health Day, students at Our Lady of Pompei, will perform acts of physical fitness such as obstacle courses, skipping, gymnastics, soccer, basketball and martial arts at 10 stations to be set up in the school yard. Over the past two months, parents have sponsored the 250 Pompei students participating in the campaign and helped them raise $18,001 for the Foundation. Teachers Mirella Ricci, Anissa Luzio and Sandra Guerra have coordinated the fundraising efforts. The May 16 schedule is as follows: Kindergarten, 9 a.m.; Cycle 1 (Grades 1 and 2), 10:20 a.m.; Cycle 2 (Grades 3 and 4), 12:55 p.m.; Cycle 3 (Grades 5 and 6) 1:55 p.m.
The students of Honoré Mercier School will hold a "Jump Off" in the schoolyard from 12:45 to 2:00 p.m. The Official Mascot and Christian Sabourin, provincial coordinator, from the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be present to accept a cheque from the school which raised a Quebec school record of $28,100. Students will be skipping in the schoolyard during the afternoon and some will be performing tricks they have learned on an outdoor stage. The class that was able to jump with the largest number of students on one skipping rope will also be demonstrating how they did it. A parent of the school, Johnny Castronovo, will be keeping the pupils jumping to the beat of great music. At the end of the "Jump Off" the pupils will receive healthy refreshments and snacks. In addition to encouraging and promoting life long fitness skills in students, physical education teachers Sandy Farr and Peter Tsatoumas indicated they also wanted to instill in pupils a sense of caring for those in our community who suffer from heart diseases.
Earlier this year Dunrae Gardens Elementary School in T.M.R raised more than $26,000 for this program.
