|LAURENHILL ACADEMY JUNIOR CAMPUS TO HOST CANADIAN ROBOTICS COMPETITION FEB. 19 to 21|
MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 11, 2004– English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is proud to announce that LaurenHill Academy Junior Campus (2355 Decelles) in St. Laurent will host Quadrum 2004, February 19 to 21. This much anticipated robotics competition features 17 Quebec high schools and CEGEPS and one secondary entry from Ontario.
Opening ceremonies will take place on Friday, February 20 at Noon.
Organized by the Educational Alliance for Science and Technology (EAST), the bilingual competition is cross-curricular with ties to English, French, math, computer science, art, science and more. The competition involves students from participating schools who will have designed and built robots. They will also have to produce a documentary video about the school and the robot. They will also organize a kiosk to present what they have done, write a 12-page journal documenting the construction of the robot and create a website to present their robot, school and the competition to the world.
All aspects of the competition are organized and executed entirely by the students themselves. Students will build robots that manipulate balls off of the floor and into tubes. Different teams of robots will have different colour balls. Robots will be grouped in teams of two for each heat. The pairings will change randomly from heat to heat. Each school’s robot will play in eight different heats.
Quadrum 2004 will begin with practice rounds from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, February 19. The competition will formally get underway on Friday, February 20, with robot design judging from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the opening ceremonies at Noon. Activities will run until 10 p.m. and continue on Saturday, February 21 from 7:30 a.m. until the conclusion of the awards banquet dance at midnight.
