EMSB CONDEMNS ACT OF ANTI-SEMITISM

MONTREAL, APRIL 5, 2004— The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) wishes to condemn in the strongest of terms the act of arson and anti-Semitic vandalism which occurred at the United Talmud Torahs Jewish day school in St. Laurent today.

"There is no place for such acts of hate in our society," said EMSB Chairman Dominic Spiridigliozzi. "These people are attacking the values of liberty. As educators we teach our children not only tolerance, but respect for diversity."

"The EMSB welcomes and respects the ethnic and cultural diversity of our students. Our goal is to foster mutual respect and understanding among the more than 100 cultural groups which make up our student body. School staff have been trained to develop a learning environment without prejudice, stereotyping or discrimination."

Mr. Spiridigliozzi is proud of the fact that this year EMSB high school students have taken part in a special Holocaust awareness programs. This has included meetings with survivors and guided visits to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre.

"I think it is incumbent upon all educational institutions to educate our children about the Holocaust," said Mr. Spiridigliozzi. "Education is the best weapon against hate."
