MONTREAL, OCTOBER 14, 2015 – With the sun shining down on Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent, students took to their schoolyard recently to inaugurate their new arboretum.

While the trees and shrubs will take many years to fully mature, over time, the schoolyard will be home to five areas where students will have the opportunity to learn, play or relax in the shade. The arboretum will complement Parkdale’s outdoor classroom and garden.

For kindergarten students, whom are the youngest children at the school, they had the honour of adopting the first tree: a White Oak. Throughout their time at Parkdale, the students will track the growth of the sapling.

On hand to officially inaugurate the arboretum were Pelagia Nickoletopoulos, Regional Director, West Sector; Athina Galanogeorgos, Assistant Director, Pedagogical Services, James Kromida, Commissioner for St. Laurent and Elpi Argyrakopoulos, Pedagogical Consultant.

The arboretum was made possible as a result of an EMSB Green Grant as well as a partnership with Vert-Cité, whom ensured the planting of over 20 trees and shrubs. Vert-Cité will also oversee the growth of the arboretum alongside generations of Parkdale students.
