|EMSB STUDENT WINS CANSPELL REGIONAL SPELLING BEE|
MONTREAL, APRIL 4, 2005– The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is proud to announce that two of its students finished at the top of the Regional CanWest CanSpell Spelling Bee competition at the Delta Centre-Ville April 3.
Jamie Deshaies, 13, of Westmount High School finished in first place followed by Marco Monteferrante, 13, of John Paul I Junior High School in St. Léonard. They are both Secondary II students. Fifty-six first-rate spellers had made it to the regional final.
"I am elated" stated EMSB Chairman Dominic Spiridigliozzi. "I think this says a lot for the public education system. When this competition began there were 75 schools, 7,812 students and 323 classes from 12 school boards and private schools."
Deshaies and Monteferrante will represent Montreal in the CanSpell National Spelling Bee April 16 in Ottawa and compete with the 20 winners and runners-up from other regions. The winner will earn a $10,000 scholarship and have his or her name engraved on the CanWest CanSpell Cup. Deshaies will also compete in the 78th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
