MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 9, 2005- Media looking for schools to visit as part of their Remembrance Day coverage are welcome to take advantage of these opportunities.
The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Thursday, November 10th:
Westmount Park Elementary School (15 Park Place) will be holding separate Remembrance Day ceremonies at 9:00 a.m. for the junior students and at 10:45 a.m. for the senior students. For more information, contact Joseph Monachino at 935-4388.
Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent (700 Brunet) will be holding separate ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. There will be poetry readings, a reflection on the significance of the poppy, a drama on human rights that will be staged by the grade 5 and 6 students and the laying of wreaths in memory of Canadian soldiers who gave their lives in World Wars I and II, Korea, the Gulf War and Afghanistan. The school also has a display window that was put together by the school’s staff and Spiritual Community Animator Mike Shaw, which features an audio-visual presentation on local personalities who were involved in the wars that Canada fought in. John Grant High School in Côte St. Luc (5785 Parkhaven) will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:00 a.m., which will include an appearance by peacekeepers from the 3rd Field Engineering Regiment. For more information, call Michael Donkers at 484-4161.
Sinclair Laird Elementary School in Park Extension (8380 Wiseman) will have their ceremony at 8:30 a.m. featuring two special guests: Jeff McCarthy, a peacekeeping veteran and main pipe musician for the Department of National Defence (DND) Reserves, and Major Pelletier of the Royal Montreal Regiment. The two will perform a military-style Remembrance Day ceremony that is actually conducted at their base. For more information, call Puynung Choy at 279-9026.
McLearon Elementary School in Pointe aux Trembles (555 19th Avenue) will conduct its observances at 10:30 a.m. with the following guest speakers: Master Corporal Russell of the Canadian Armed Forces, Mrs. Crichton of the Royal Canadian Legion and Father McEntee, a World War II Royal Canadian Navy veteran. A musician from the Canadian Armed Forces will be playing "O Canada", "Amazing Grace" and "Last Post/Reveille" during the assembly. For more information, call Rocco Speranza at 645-6131.
Honoré Mercier Elementary School in St. Léonard (8280 Nantes) will be holding three separate ceremonies at 8:15 a.m. (Cycle 2), 8:55 a.m. (Cycle 1) and 9:45 a.m. (Cycle 3). For more information, call Maria Corsini-Kelly at 323-2980.

Royal West Academy in Montreal West (189 Easton) will conduct three separate Remembrance Day ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. For more information, call Joseph Monachino at 489-8454.
Merton Elementary School in Cote St. Luc (5554 Robinson) will commemorate Remembrance Day with a traditional observance at 11:00 a.m. and several veterans from some of the students’ families will be paying visits to different classes throughout the school. They will also conduct an assembly with its Cycle 3 – Year 1 classes at 12:30 p.m. EMSB Spiritual Community Animator Catherine Cherry will address the students with her own personal story of how the power of the bonds of friendship can break the violence of war. Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North (11575 P.M. Favier) will commemorate Remembrance Day with a short service that will be delivered over the school’s P.A. system to the entire school population. For more information, call Carol Lavoie at 328-4442.
Pierre de Coubertin Elementary School in St. Léonard (4700 Lavoisier) will conduct four separate Remembrance Day ceremonies at 8:45 a.m. (Level 6), 10:50 a.m. (Level 5), 1:15 p.m. (Level 4) and 2:30 p.m. (Level 3). For more information, call Maria Corsini-Kelly at 323-6586.
Carlyle Elementary School in Town of Mount Royal (109 Carlyle) will hold its assembly at 2:00 p.m. with guest speaker John Franken, a World War II veteran from Indonesia, who was featured in the film "Tea at the Embassy". For more information, call Pynung Choy at 738-1256.
Elizabeth Ballantyne School in Montreal West (314 Northview) will conduct a Remembrance Day ceremony (time TBA). For more information, call Michael Donkers at 484-1006.
Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount (4699 Westmount) will begin its Remembrance Day observances in the morning with selected classes attending ceremonies at the Westmount cenotaph. This will be followed by an assembly at the school gym that will feature presentations by several classes (time for both events TBA). For more information, call Gladys Batten at 481-5581.
St. Monica Elementary School in NDG (6440 Terrebonne) will conduct class-by-class Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the entire day. For more information, call Catherine Cherry at 369-0070.
Willingdon Elementary School in NDG (5879 Terrebonne) will commemorate Remembrance Day with a traditional observance at 11:00 a.m. and several veterans from some of the students’ families will be paying visits to different classes throughout the school. Also, an assembly will take place on Monday, November 14 at 2:30 p.m. EMSB Spiritual Community Animator Catherine Cherry will address the students with her own personal story of how the power of the bonds of friendship can break the violence of war. Westmount High School (4350 St. Catherine Street West) will commemorate Remembrance Day with a traditional observance at 11:00 a.m. As well, veterans will be visiting different classes, and a special Remembrance Day display is being featured in the school’s lobby. Marymount Academy in NDG (5100 Cote St. Luc Road) will be holding short Remembrance Day ceremonies with seven of its classes (time TBA). For more information, call Catherine Cherry at 488-8144.
In the days prior to November 10 and 11, the following EMSB schools held these Remembrance Day commemorations: 30 students from John Paul I Junior High School in St. Léonard paid a visit to the Ste. Ann’s Veteran’s Hospital on October 28 and held an assembly on November 9; World War II veteran Bob Larivière visited Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North on November 2 to sell poppies and chat with the students; Edward Murphy Elementary School in the East End held an assembly on November 7 with guest speakers from the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Legion; East Hill Elementary School in RDP held an assembly on November 8 with guest speakers from the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Legion; Royal Vale School in NDG held a ceremony on November 7 that featured World War II veterans Geoff Knowles and Allan Raymond; Edinburgh School in Montreal West held a ceremony on November 8 that featured World War II veteran John Franken; Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent held a ceremony on November 9 that also honoured Corporal Ainsworth Dyer, a former Parkdale student, who was killed in action in Afghanistan; Frederick Banting School in Montreal North held a celebration of peace and remembrance on November 7; Our Lady of Pompei School in Montreal held three separate ceremonies on November 8; the grade 10 students of Marymount Academy in NDG learned about the meaning of Remembrance Day during two separate sessions on November 7; St. John Bosco School in LaSalle held ceremonies on November 8; Options II School held an assembly that featured a visit by three members of the Grenadier Guards on November 8; Options I School and Elizabeth High School held assemblies on November 9.
