|EMSB TO KICK OFF SCHOOL YEAR BY RECOGNIZING EXCEPTIONAL ROBOTICS CHAMPS|
MONTREAL, AUGUST 28, 2006- The English Montreal School Board will kick off the 2006-2007 academic year on Tuesday August 29 by showcasing Coronation Elementary School’s (4810 Van Horne) exceptional robotics program.
Media are invited to the Côte des Neiges school at 9:30 a.m as Principal Diane Wood Nolan welcomes students at a special ceremony/assembly. EMSB vice Chair Elizabeth Fokoefs, Deputy Director General Donald A. Reid, Regional Director Mario Tirelli and Federal Member of Parliament Irwin Cotler will be on hand.
Coronation, guided by teacher Patrick Charland, recently took home first place in the Junior Robocup in Bremen, Germany. They were also given the prize for congeniality. It marked their second world championship in three years.
While some of the students have graduated, robotics team member Smita Patel is back. She will be among those recognized in the special school assembly as the official trophies and plaques they received in Germany are put on display. "These students are not only accomplished in robotics but are leaders in our school," says Ms. Wood. "I know that our graduates will continue to do well in high school and carry forward the positive image of our school. We are lucky to be able to keep Smita for one more year. I am sure she will show the new Cycle III students what robotics is all about."
