|EMSB FACILITY HOSTS MONTREAL’S REGIONAL SKILLS OLYMPIADS|
MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 14, 2018 – While Quebec Olympians are raking in the medals in Pyeongchang, Montreal trade school students prepare for their own Olympiad.The English Montreal School Board’s (EMSB) vocational training facility specializing in automobile mechanics, and welding and fitting will host the island of Montreal’s Skills Olympiad (Competence Québec) on Thursday, February 15 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will take place at 6065 Boulevard des Grandes-Prairies in Saint-Léonard.
The Skills Olympiad, geared to students under the age of 21, will showcase two vocational programs: welding and automobile mechanics. Eight students from four school boards (EMSB, Lester B. Pearson School Board, Commission scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the Commission scolaire de Montréal will compete in the automobile mechanics competition. Eight students from four school boards (EMSB, CSDM, CSMB, Commission scolaire de la Pointe-de-l'Île will compete in welding. All competitors have already won top ranking at their respective school board competitions.
Competitions will take place from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Final judging will take place from 4:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Winners will be announced between 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.
Competitors will be vying for the ultimate prize – qualifying to compete in the 15th annual Quebec Provincial Skills Olympiad, which takes place in Montreal on May 3 and 4 and will showcase 38 trades. The goal is to ultimately attend the World skills competition.
The local Skills Olympiad is open to the public. It provides an excellent opportunity to youth sector students under the age of 21 and in CEGEP to learn more about these trades and future careers in the industry. Some of the most renowned companies in manufacturing and automotive have given their support to the students. Corporate sponsors Walter Technologies, Lincoln Electric, Air Liquide and DES Canada will be on site to meet with competitors and the public.
