John Grant is an alternative special education vocational centre, which caters to students with mild to severe learning difficulties. The goals of the school – which varies according to the abilities of the students involved – are to assist in developing their life and academic skills to the fullest potential, as well as to promote their entry into the regular work force through extensive vocational and work study programs. There are even programs to aid students to get themselves ready for independent living.
The school has a modified academic program, with small class room sizes in a learning environment that is warm, supportive and multicultural. There is a full range of non-credited academic subjects such as the arts, sciences, social sciences, languages, physical education, computer literacy, health and wellness, home economics and citizenship programs. The school’s vocational program offers courses, which are linked to work study in the community, which include building maintenance, food services, grounds keeping and horticulture, hairdressing, and early childhood care.
