|IMPACT TEAMS UP WITH THE EMSB FOR YEAR THREE OF STAY-IN-SCHOOL PROGRAM|
MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 — The Montreal Impact and the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) kicked off the successful stay-in-school program called All the Way with the Impact (Jusqu’au bout avec l’Impact), Wednesday, designed to promote the importance of persevering in school.
The official English tour launch took place at Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent, featuring the presence of players Mauro Biello and Adam Braz, as well as ambassador and former player Lloyd Barker, and club president Joey Saputo.
“We’re thrilled with the success of this stay-in-school program and of this partnership,” said Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo. “Many parallels can be drawn between academic success and excellence in sports, and to that effect, many players on our team are good examples of perseverance and excellence for children.”
EMSB Chair Angela Mancini applauded the initiative. “Players from the Montreal Impact serve as role models for our students,” she remarked. “Our experience over the past two years was appreciated by everyone, from the school visits to the exciting games we attended. We can’t wait to do it all over again.”
Over the next few weeks, Lloyd Barker will visit some EMSB elementary and high schools to discuss with students the importance of staying in school and striving for excellence.
As part of the partnership, the Impact’s game on Wednesday, June 4 against Miami FC will be dedicated to the EMSB. In each of the last two seasons, the EMSB sold 3,500 tickets per game.
The Impact will once again hold a special ceremony before the game, highlighting some of the most outstanding students, and bursaries will be awarded to those with the highest academic standings. These bursaries are named in honour of the late Tony Licursi, the long-time Impact statistician who died two years ago. Mr. Licursi was a member of the EMSB’s James Lyng High School Alumni Association.
As part of the partnership, Mr. Saputo will return for the second consecutive year as honourary chairman of the annual EMSB Golf Scholarship Tournament. It will take place on Friday, June 27 at Saint Raphaël Golf Club in Île Bizard.
The Impact will kick off the 2008 First Division United Soccer Leagues season on
