MONTREAL, MAY 27, 2008- If you could have the ideal kind of school – elementary or secondary – what would that be? That is the question the English Montreal School Board Commission on Focus Schools has been asking during the month of May.
Regional hearings have allowed members of the Commission to listen to parents who presently have children in EMSB schools, pre-school or private schools. Representatives from the community-at-large and from local municipalities and boroughs have also been invited to participate. Previous hearings took place at at Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard and Dunrae Gardens Elementary School in T.M.R. Tonight (7:30 p.m.) proceedings will conclude at Hampstead Elementary School (83 Thurlow) in Hampstead.
Commission Chair Syd Wise said that he is hoping for some interesting proposals. “We will listen attentively and ask questions,” he said. “Once all three hearings have taken place we will deliberate and then bring forward recommendations to the Council of Commissioners.”
States EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini: “As parents you may have recognized particular talents in your children and wish them to be challenged by an appropriate focus program such as fine arts, performing arts, sports or something else in addition to the prescribed studies.”
Five other school commissioners are serving on the Commission with Mr. Wise. They are: Marvin Helfenbaum, Joseph Lalla, Bernard Praw and Anne Williams.
