EMSB TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY ON  WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8

MONTREALSEPTEMBER 11,  2008—   In an effort to encourage students to pursue healthy and physically active lifestyles,  the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) will participate in a simple but exciting activity, a Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October, 8, 2008.    It will begin at 7:30 a.m.,  with two walks starting from   N.D.G. Park at the corner of Marcil and Cote St. Antoine and Hampstead Town Hall on Queen Mary Road   and two others  beginning at 8:30 a.m. from Confederation Park at the corner of  Kensington and Fielding and Patricia Park at the corner of Fielding and Patricia.

Participants in the International Walk to School Day are the  students and parents from  the EMSB’s Royal Vale , St. Monica,  Willingdon, Hampstead and Elizabeth Ballantyne schools and one private school, Lower Canada College.  Students who participate will walk to school with their parents or be dropped off at one of  the   designated  starting points. This will be the second consecutive year the EMSB has spearheaded this project, with physical education teacher Norman Katz and physical education and health consultant Sandy Farr leading the way. McGill University physical education students will be on hand to animate the warmups.

Both the  NDG YMCA and Montreal Police Station 11 have  joined the event as community partners. The Police have in fact planned the walking routes.  There will be supervision both in the parks and throughout the walk, N.D.G. Côte des Neiges Borough Mayor Michael Applebaum, Hampstead Mayor William Steinberg and EMSB officials have also been invited to participate.
