MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 7,  2008-  The  English Montreal School Board (EMSB) has launched a new program with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Montreal Juniors as the team reaches out specifically to high school students.

On  Wednesday, Nov. 5, hundreds of students from Royal Vale School were in attendance at the game against Val d’Or,    while  on  Wednesday, Nov. 12, it will be students from Westmount High attending the Montreal-Acadie Bathurst match. Marymount Academy in N.D.G. is on the schedule for Wednesday, February 11 against Victoriaville;  John Paul I Junior High School in St. Léonard for  Sunday, February 15 against Gatineau;  and LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent  for  Friday, February 27 against Drummondville.

Other schools will announce their dates soon.

In the case of Royal Vale, one former student – Christopher Smith – plays for Montreal while another, Marco Scandella,  is on the Val d’Or squad.  He was drafted in the second round of the  2008 NHL draft  by the Minnesota Wild.  Goaltender Jake Allen,   a draft choice  of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and forward Matthew Brenton  visited Royal Vale on  November 4  to meet with students, talk about how they have been combining academics with elite hockey  and even play a little floor hockey.  Two other players will be at Westmount High (4350 Ste. Catherine)  on Monday, November 10 (9 a.m.) in advance of their game night – star forwardsAngelo Esposito and Luke Adam, property of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers and Buffalo Sabres respectively.

Home games are played at the Verdun Auditorium, only a block away from the De L’Église Metro Station. Schools interested in this program should email
