PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL, APRIL 29, 2009-   English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Director General Antonio Lacroce has sent a letter to all parents in the system related to the current swine flu outbreak.

“Government health agencies have put the province's health system on alert,” Mr. Lacroce states. “They are closely monitoring the situation for any new cases of the influenza virus. Currently there are zero reported cases of the influenza in Quebec.”

Mr. Lacroce noted that as a precautionary measure, public health officials are advising people to take the following steps to protect themselves and their families against the flu or from spreading it to others:

  • If your child is sick, keep them at home. Avoid contact with others when sick. Anyone who develops a fever or cough and has recently returned or had contact with someone recently returned from Mexico or the southern U.S., should call their health provider for advice before visiting a physician's office, medicentre or emergency room.
  • Teach your children to wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth after touching door handles and other surfaces that may harbour influenza and other viruses.
  • Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow or sleeve. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.

If  parents have any questions they are urged to contact their health care provider.
