MONTREAL, JUNE 3, 2009- On the occasion of World Environment Day, Liberal Member of Parliament for Papineau Justin Trudeau will visit the Cycle II and III students at East Hill Elementary School (10350 Perras) in Rivière-des-Prairies Friday, June 5 at 9 :30 a.m.
World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues, empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The theme for WED 2009 is “Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change.” It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests. In the case of East Hill, the school has established a Green Team and expanded recycling beyond paper. With the support of the Green Team, the school now recycles milk cartons, plastic and aluminum. “There has been a considerable drop in the level of waste at East Hill over the course of the last two years,” says East Hill Principal Maria Di Perna. “Parents have come forth at East Hill to mention their children have insisted on recycling at home, that parents’ guilt has spurred them to begin recycling.”
Teachers Nadia Barrafato, Rocco Simone and Spiritual Community Animator Rocco Speranza helped coordinate the project.
