EMSB MOURNS THE PASSING OF GEORGE VOGAS

MONTREAL,  NOVEMBER  19,  2009-    The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is mourning the passing of former commissioner and one-time Executive Committee  Chair George Vogas. Mr. Vogas served as a commissioner for Ward 13, which covers the Park Extension and Plateau Mont-Royal districts, from 1998 to 2007 with the EMSB and prior to that for 18 years with the former Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (PSBGM). He passed away suddenly on November 15.

“Mr. Vogas was always a dedicated member of the English school board community,” said EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini. “He was appreciated for his straight forward and no-nonsense attitude when it came to school board matters. His heart was always in the right place. He will be missed by all who knew him within the school board community.”

“I am still in a state of shock,” said James Kromida, the current Commissioner for Ward 11, who worked with Mr. Vogas since the EMSB was established in 1998. “George brought to the table a great deal of knowledge and wisdom and he always worked tirelessly for the benefit of the board. I always had a great deal of respect for George, and I was honoured that he considered me his friend.”

“George was very interested in doing well for the children,” said Antonio Lacroce, recently retired Director General of the EMSB. “During his years as a commissioner, he tried to work collaboratively with everyone, in order to make the board move forward.”

Stated George Vathilakis, the EMSB’s first chairman: “George Vogas was a friend first of all. He was also a great believer in education, and he worked most of his life towards improving the quality of education. He also believed that education was the only vehicle for success in society. He was always out there for the benefit of a child. This is a great loss for the education world.”

Mr. Vogas leaves behind his wife Linda, who taught at the John F. Kennedy Business Centre in St. Michel, and his daughter Angela, who is a teacher at Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent, his son Evans and two grandsons
