MONTREAL,  JUNE 8, 2010  After working in the educational sector for 38 years, Mario Tirelli has announced that he will step down as Director General of the English Montreal School Board, effective this summer.

Prior to his current posting,  Mr. Tirelli had served as deputy director general for two years and a regional director for six years, overseeing 30 elementary, secondary, outreach and social affairs schools. He also served on a number of committees, including Long Range Planning.  Before coming to work at the head office, he  spent 12 years as  the  principal of  three schools in St. Léonard – Honoré Mercier, Pierre de Coubertin and Laurier Macdonald. From 1977 to 1986 he served as the vice-principal of four schools – Napoleon Courtemanche, Roussin Academy, John Paul I and Laurier Macdonald. He began his career in education 37 years ago, in 1972 , as a mathematics teacher at Laurier Macdonald

“Throughout my 38 years of service to students, I have been guided by values of trust, respect and responsibility and the relationships built on these values,” Mr. Tirelli stated. “They have served me well, personally and professionally. Today, for personal and professional reasons, I have decided to retire.

“I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received over all these years. I have been fortunate to have known and worked with many wonderful people- dedicated and passionate people serving our students. In serving and in giving, I have received so much and I am very grateful.”

EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini wished Mr. Tirelli well in his retirement.  The Council of Commissioners will discuss how to fill his position when they next meet on June 16.
